About Us

who we are today

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization rooted in the land and community of Hanalei, Kauai, guiding K–8 learners through education shaped by curiosity, exploration, and a deep relationship with place.

from then to now

earth school began long before it had a name…

In 2017, it was simply a homeschool group tucked inside a well-loved bus in Hā’ena, Kaua’i – a few curious children, a handful of books, and the endless classroom of the island itself.

Each day, we rolled open the doors and stepped straight into lessons shaped by tide pools, rainforests, and mountain trails. Learning was hands-on, messy, joyful, and rooted deeply in nature.

the community began to notice

As we wandered the beaches and valleys, families started to notice children who were grounded, confident and awake to the world around them. They saw the impact of learning that wasn’t confined to four walls – learning that asked kids to explore, observe, question and connect. Word spread, and soon the little bus was filling faster than it could hold.

By 2019, the demand had grown and two more educators joined the adventure. Together, we shaped an environment-centered approach where students learn not just in nature, but from nature. The program grew organically because the children grew themselves – more resilient, more curious, and more deeply connected to the land.

Eight years later….

Eight years later, what began with three keiki in a small bus now serves learners from kindergarten through eighth grade. Our growth wasn’t planned; it unfolded naturally, shaped by families seeking something real – rooted, meaningful, and hands-on.

In 2024, to reflect who we had become, we rebranded as Earth School Hawai‘i. With that transformation came a new step: building a dedicated campus to meet rising demand while preserving the heart of what makes our school unique. Even as we expand, our philosophy remains the same – nature as teacher, curiosity as compass, and the land as the foundation for deep, authentic learning.

From a bus in Hā‘ena to a thriving, land-based learning community, our story continues to grow – grounded in values that keep us connected to the earth beneath our feet.

still growing

Earth School continues to evolve with the rhythms of our community and the land that shapes us. As we grow, our commitment remains the same – learning that is rooted in nature, guided by curiosity, and strengthened by connection. We’re grateful for every family, educator, and child who becomes part of our story.
